Out and about with Eleni Antoniou

Worth a shot

Sfinakia is one of the few nightclubs in Nicosia with lasting appeal

I WAS late as usual. Running out of the house with one shoe in my hand, trying to gather car keys, house keys, lipstick, mobile while attempting to hop on one foot. Fifteen minutes late and my girlfriend is screaming at me.

I was overjoyed to find out that my job also includes going out to clubs and having a swell time. Of course, you never know if it will be a night to remember or one you will want to forget. That’s why I go first. So, this week, we’ve got Sfinakia on the menu and you are in for a treat. One of Nicosia’s most popular clubs, Sfinakia, which means shots, has managed throughout the years, to maintain a good name and above all strict face control. “I’d rather the club was empty than have anybodies interrupting the other people,” said Marios Ataliotis, co-owner of Sfinakia.

I met Marios when I visited the club. Warmly welcomed by a girl standing at the door, I think my friend and I must have been face controlled, as I had heard so much. After a quick explanation as to why I was there and why I was looking for Marios, we were seated at the bar. Although the club isn’t very big, it is designed in a modern and comfortable way. It isn’t as dark as other clubs, so you don’t get the feeling you’re trapped somewhere and want to get out after an hour.

Although I love clubbing, after two or three drinks, I usually want to sit down and rest my tired feet from those three-inch heels and also save myself any embarrassment of falling over due to the lack of balance. Anyway, I hate it when I really want to sit down and the stool ends up being one of those you would only have as an ornament because it is impossible to sit in. Well, at last I have found a club that has stools you can actually sit in. They were great plus they were colourful: red, black, green and blue. But don’t get a playground picture because the other side of the club has white leather couches. Perfect.

You’ll need a reservation if you want to avoid disappointment. Enjoy a drink or open a bottle of Vodka with your friends, while you dance to commercial music.

Wednesday is a good night for a drink and some peace as Marios informed me, “but there’s no peace after 12!” Thursdays and Sundays are student nights and Fridays and Saturdays are just… nights! We all know what goes down, on a Saturday night. But if you want to go down in style, go where the politicians and celebrities go. Go Sfinakia and try out those white leather couches for me.
