Why did we not veto?

Sir,
I am a little confused. What is our president doing? I saw him on television before Christmas, all smiles, celebrating with pro-Turkish EU leaders, after a date was given to Turkey to start accession talks.

I was under the impression that our president was going to veto Turkey unless it withdrew its troops from northern Cyprus. This is what 75 per cent of Greek Cypriots wanted.

I like many others voted against the Annan plan because of this pledge.
It seems that now Turkey will join but Cyprus will remain divided.
