Road toll passes 100 mark on a weekend of tragedy
TWO SERIOUS traffic accidents in the Famagusta district claimed the lives of two more people and pushing the year’s road poll above the 100 mark.
The first accident occurred yesterday morning on the Protaras road when 59-year-old Michalis Papaioannou lost control of the motorbike he was riding, clipped the pavement and hit the road. Papaioannou later succumbed to his injuries. Papaioannou, formerly an Egyptian citizen, only recently acquired his Cypriot citizenship.
The second accident occurred around midday Sunday on the Ayia Napa – Protaras road, near Cape Greco, when driver Ahmed Intz collided with a car being a driven a 32-year-old woman from the Famagusta district who was travelling with her child.
Intz, who was travelling with two 19-year-old women and a 22-year-old man, was killed instantly. His three passengers were seriously injured and taken to Larnaca General Hospital.
Earlier at the weekend and late on Friday, five people were injured in five different accidents with all people being taken to hospital.
On Sunday lunchtime, a 49-year-old resident of Limassol ran over a 20-year-old in Germasoyias. The 20-year-old is being kept in hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.
In an accident late on Saturday night in Limassol, a 55-year-old man lost control of his vehicle and fell into a ditch colliding, into a wall at the bottom of the embankment. The man, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was taken to Limassol General Hospital where he was kept for observation.
Earlier on the Tsadas – Letympou road in Paphos, a 45-year-old man was found unconscious on the road with preliminary investigations from police suggesting a case of hit and run. In another incident an 18-year-old driver hit an 85-year-old pedestrian just outside the emergency ward at Nicosia General Hospital. Both people have been kept in hospital for observation.
The series of pedestrian accidents began on Friday when a 15-year-old boy was left in critical condition after being hit by a car while crossing a street in Limassol at around 9pm at night. A 27-year old, also from Limassol, was driving the car involved in the accident. Police are still investigating the incident and no further reports have been released about the boy’s condition.
