I have read with interest the letter from David and Fiona Boyd in yesterday’s Cyprus Mail.
Perhaps I could add to the debate but from a slightly different perspective.

Firstly let me say that I agree with every word they say and my own personal experience very much bears this out.

Keravnos: economy on the mend

FINANCE Minister Makis Keravnos yesterday said the economy was showing signs of recovery and reiterated the government’s determination to cut the budget deficit in line with the Eurozone ceiling.

Speaking before parliament, ahead of the discussion of the 2005 budget, Keravnos said the economy displayed a satisfactory recovery, compared to 2003.

Big names to go under the hammer in Limassol

LIMASSOL is set to hold the biggest ever auction in Cyprus tonight at 8 with paintings by Henri De Toulouse-Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, Raul Duffy and Salvador Dali up for grabs.
The auction, set to be held at Hermal’s Auction House, will auction 110 paintings all valued at £10 million.

Crackdown on illegal tutors starts in earnest

POLICE charged two more teachers yesterday after they were caught giving illegal out of hours tuition to students.

Police spokesman Demetris Demetriou confirmed that officers armed with search warrants raided two houses in the Famagusta area, after they received a tip off that teachers there were engaged in giving ‘extra’ lessons without a permit.

Watchdog says it’s been a good – but not great – year

THE AUDITOR-general yesterday said her report for 2003 was improved compared to other years.

Speaking after submitting her report to President Tassos Papadopoulos, Chrystalla Georkadji said the improvement was due to the fact that people recognised that through her service’s suggestions and the adoption of better practices they improved the efficiency of their service.

Hellenic sees profits nosedive

HELLENIC Bank Group have seen a great fall in profits after the release of the nine-month result charter which saw the declared profits in the P&L account wiped out by major revaluation on investments losses in the Reserve account.

Stormy days ahead

WEATHER conditions are expected to deteriorate today, according to the head of the Metrological Centre Kyriacos Theophilou.

Talking to state radio, Theophilou had stated that weather condition would worsen yesterday although most of Nicosia experienced sunny weather during the day with slight showers.

Road toll spiralling upwards

ONE hundred people have died in 94 fatal road accidents so far this year, according to the latest figures.

Justice Minister Doros Theodorou said 20 of those who died were aged under 21, while 344 serious injuries during the first nine months of the year were among people aged less than 25.
