Key talks in bid to avert further CY strike

DISRUPTIONS caused by a two-hour strike by Cyprus Airways (CY) pilots were kept to a minimum yesterday, the airline said, but the possibility of a longer strike on Thursday is still hanging in the balance.

Union ultimatum over pay

SEMI-government employees will hold a 24-hour warning strike on December 1 if the government fails to improve a proposal for the renewal of their collective agreements by the end of this month.

The decision was taken during an emergency union meeting yesterday afternoon and announced by OIO-SEK general-secretary, Nikos Tampas.

Road deaths surpass 2003 total

TWO men were killed less than 36 hours apart in the latest series of fatal weekend road accidents, police said yesterday. The men’s deaths have brought the total number of dead to 98, one more than the total number of dead for all of last year.

Serbian businessman ponders lawsuit against Laiki directors

LAWYERS for a Serbian businessman were yesterday considering filing lawsuits against the directors of the Popular Bank and the directors of a defunct company.
Businessman Predrag Djordjevic attempted to ship cotton into Yugoslavia at the height of the Bosnian war in 1994, with a United Nations permit.

Yugoslavia was subject to a strict UN embargo at the time.

Governor sees ERM deal by March

CYPRUS and the European Union should reach agreement on the country’s admission into the European exchange rate mechanism (ERM2) by the end of next March, Central Bank of Cyprus Governor Christodoulos Christodoulou said yesterday.

“I agree with the government’s aim of joining as soon as possible,” he told Reuters after a meeting in parliament.

Cheaper fuel prices come into force

CONSUMERS will be getting – at least temporarily – a breather as the price of fuel drops, just as winter gets ready to kick in.

The break came on Saturday, when parliament approved a tax reduction of three cents on heating oil; that, coupled with a 2.5 to 3 cent fall in market prices due to a drop in crude oil prices, would alleviate people’s pockets by almost six cents per litre.
