THE OPPOSITION yesterday accused the government of transforming social measures to reduce heating fuel prices into an excuse for tax collection, and warned that it would vote against proposals to cut the cost of heating fuel, while simultaneously raising petrol duties.

Second plague of locusts appears

A SECOND, larger swarm of red locusts yesterday appeared in the Paphos district and started to attack crops; only hours after the government said it hoped to have the locust infestation under control by the end of the day.

The locusts were first sighted in the Akamas region of the island on Sunday, before spreading east towards Limassol.

Talat: EU told me to lay off on trade ahead of December

THE European Union has issued warnings to the Turkish Cypriot side not to provoke the Cyprus Republic into vetoing the start of Turkey’s accession negotiations, Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat said yesterday.

Turkey, whose application to join the EU dates back to 1963, is desperate to get a date for the start of accession negotiations at the EU summit on December 17.

Switch off your television or risk a fire

THE Fire Service gave a clear warning to the public yesterday to switch their televisions off after use. Fire Service spokesman Stelios Stylianou highlighted that the TV ‘standby’ function was one of the biggest causes of household fires and extremely dangerous.

Woman jailed for stealing £51,000 from her company

A 38-YEAR-old woman was yesterday sentenced to 18 months in jail for stealing around £51,000 in the space of three years from the Nicosia company she worked for.

Miranda Gavril was arrested in June 2002 after the owner of the company reported that she had stolen £51,383 between 1999 and 2002.

The defendant admitted to stealing the money, the court heard.
