Man killed in crash

A 60-YEAR-old father of two from the Famagusta district was killed yesterday after his car was rammed violently on the side by a speeding four-by-four.

The collision was so violent that it almost cut the victim’s car in two.

Andreas Pingos from the village of Frenaros was on the way to his orchard, just off the Vrysoulles to Frenaros road.

While trying to turn right, just before 1pm, he was hit by a Nissan Patrol driven by a 38-year-old man from Vrysoulles.

Pingos’ vehicle fell into a ditch on the side of the road.

Soldiers serving in the area freed the man from the car but he was already dead, reports said.

He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The scene was visited by officers of the Famagusta traffic department, who examined the scene in order to establish the circumstances of the 11th deadly traffic accident in the district.

Famagusta police operations director Theodoros Sergiou put the accident down to negligence and speeding.

Sergiou said the state of the road and the time of day did not justify such an accident.
But according to reports, the specific road has been the scene of many serious and deadly accidents in the part.
