Oil spill taints Limassol coast

A LARGE stretch of the Limassol coastline has been covered in patches of oil with authorities investigating the possibility that it came from an electric power station in Vasiliko.

The oil first appeared last Friday, covering the sea region from Dasoudi to Ayios Tychonas. According to sources, authorities are investigating reports that the oil slick could have occurred during the maintenance of crude oil pipes at the Electricity Authority’s power station in Vasiliko.

Head of the Fishing Department Gabriel Gabrielides said the patches were many and have been around since Friday, making the clean up a difficult task.
