HARAVGI: “One-on-one between Tassos and Annan” The AKEL mouthpiece reported yesterday on how the Cyprus problem fell under the microscope in New York following a meeting between President of Republic Tassos Papadopoulos and UN Secretary-general Kofi Annan. President Papadopoulos later stated that no new ideas have been introduced just yet but that they would in due time.

ALITHIA: “Talat secret meetings revealed” The right-wing paper talks about new attacks from Mehmet Ali Talat against President Tassos Papadopoulos stating that Talat has revealed that he was told by President Papadopoulos not to speak about the meetings he had with him in Strakka. Talat further accused President Papadopoulos of not behaving in an ethical way.

MACHI: “Even CyBC is suffering financially” Sotiris Sampson’s Machi newspaper has highlighted state broadcaster CyBC who are allegedly suffering financially. According to sources, the television and radio network could be in danger of not being able to pay the salaries of its employees by next year, a problem Cyprus Airways is facing also.

PHILELEFTHEROS: “A window of light” Phileleftheros reports on the groundbreaking decision by a supreme court judge to give back property in the south to a Turkish Cypriot. The Turkish Cypriot had appealed to the courts stating that he wanted his house, which is currently being occupied by Greek Cypriots, given back to him.

POLITIS: “End of an era” Politis newspaper makes mention of President Papadopoulos’ speech to the United Nations in New York quoting the President as calling on Turkey to “turn a new page together in finding a solution to the Cyprus Problem”. The President also played down the Annan Plan whilst also link Turkey’s accession into the European Union with the Cyprus problem.

SIMERINI: “We want the same solution” Simerini likewise focuses on President Papadopoulos’ speech in New York to the United Nations. The president points out the issues that can help Cyprus reach a solution saying, “The destiny of Cyprus and Turkey should be partners and not enemies”.
