Bart-Williams signs for APOEL

CYPRUS champions APOEL have signed former England international Chris Bart-Williams on a free transfer.

31-year-old Bart-Williams, who has been released by Charlton Athletic, last season played for Ipswich Town, where he won the praise of the coach Joy Royle. Talking to the club’s official website following a one month extension to his loan transfer, the Ipswich manager said, “I’ve spoken with Charlton boss Alan Curbishley and he has agreed that we can extend Chris’ loan spell for another month. Chris has made a great contribution for us. I am delighted he will be able to stay with us longer.”

The England center back, who was born in Sierra Leone, made a name for himself during the nineties, particularly during his days at Nottingham Forrest, before switching to Charlton. He played for England in the 1992 UEFA European Championships in Sweden.

Bart-Williams passed a medical in Nicosia last night and has signed a one-year deal with APOEL following the nod from coach Ivan Jovanovic. APOEL got their championship off to a flying start last weekend with a 5-1 hammering of Alki Larnaca at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium. The highlight of the evening was the hat trick from newly signed striker Marios Neophytou.
