European Affairs office in Limassol

LIMASSOL Mayor Demetris Kontides opened the Office of European Affairs in Limassol yesterday, to help bring the city’s residents one step closer to the EU.

The office will operate as an information centre and point of contact between the municipality, media and city residents on EU-related issues and other topics concerning the municipality.

The office is on the south side of the Municipal Market on Hadjiloizis Michailides Street.

According to the mayor, the office’s main activities will be to evaluate proposals for participation in European programmes and to co-ordinate and monitor their implementation. The new office will also participate in seminars, lectures, workshops, studies, while creating and maintaining contacts with European, local and governmental bodies for the exchange of information on European affairs. The office will also take on programmes to increase awareness of the public and media on these issues as well as on the activities of the municipality.

“The municipality hopes that this effort will be embraced the people of Limassol and bring the required result, which is to establish reciprocal communication with the aim of developing and upgrading the Municipality’s services so it can become worthy of its European mission,” said Kontides.

The mayor also announced the re-publication of an information pamphlet, which aims at strengthening communication with the citizen and enhancing the understanding of problems in the local community.

“This effort of the municipality is part of a general policy to secure the right of citizens to have access to clear and understandable information on various issues concerning the local community and to have a say in important decisions affecting their future,” said Kontides.

Over 10,000 copies of the leaflet will be circulated for free every four months.
