Bi-communal rally to raise money for hospitals

Driving route crosses island’s divide

GREEK and Turkish Cypriots are organising a bi-communal car rally that will start in Kyrenia and finish in Limassol.

According to a news release, the Mercedes Club Cyprus, the Classic & Sports Car Club in the north and the Paphos Classic Vehicle Club will organise the rally on September 17-19.

“The Cyclamen Rally, named after the flower that grows on the Kyrenia Mountains, aims at uniting all the people of our beautiful island and bringing permanent peace and equality, irrespective of ethnic or religious differences,” the news release read.

The race will cover the cities of Nicosia and Paphos and end up in Limassol. The start will take place at Kyrenia Harbour and will follow a route along the Pentadactylos mountain range before returning to Kyrenia for the night.

The following day, the drivers will head to Nicosia, where they will hold a half-hour celebration with the two Mayors of the City.

The drivers will then take off for Paphos where they will spend the night. The following day they will drive to Limassol where the prize ceremony will take place at around noon.

Entry fees have been set at £100 per crew, including hotel accommodation and all meals from Friday to Sunday. Additional passengers will pay £50 for entry and £50 for extra rooms.

Entry fees may be provided by sponsors and drivers may advertise their sponsors on their cars. The net proceeds will go towards the purchase of medical equipment for the Paphos and Kyrenia hospitals. Monday, September 13 is the last day for entries.
