PHILELEFTHEROS: “Turkish Cypriot VIPS at Athens Olympics”. In its lead story, the daily reported that Turkish-Cypriot politicians and VIPs have been invited to attend the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony in Athens on Friday. Sources say that arrangements have already been made for Mustafa Akinci, leader of the Peace and Democracy Movement. The paper’s same sources said the Greek Foreign Ministry was actively encouraging these visits.
ALITHIA: “Lillikas closes up shop”. The paper accused the Papadopoulos government of downgrading the previous administration’s Research & Technology programme and of stealing some of its ideas. In particular, it claims, the only initiative undertaken by Minister of Commerce Giorgos Lillikas was the controversial deal with Harvard University, where it emerged the minister’s cousin had interceded as liaison.
THARROS: “Memorial event marred”. An anti-occupation event organised by the Famagusta municipality over the weekend turned sour when a crowd began jeering the Education Minister as he was laying a wreath. People shouted slogans against President Papadopoulos, urging him to resign over his stance on the national issue. The crowd also shouted down DIKO acting chairman Nikos Kleanthous.
POLITIS: “ A new national carrier?”. According to the daily, the government is now determined to set straight the finances of ailing Cyprus Airways. An “emergency action plan” has been formulated for the national air carrier; but if it fails the government is prepared to go as far as radical restructuring or even setting up an entirely new company. However, trade unions have not been receptive to the plan.
SIMERINI: “Greece issues warning to Turkey over airspace violations”. Amid continuing breaches of Greek airspace by Turkish fighters, Greece’s Defence Ministry has issued a strong warning to Ankara via NATO channels. According to reports, Athens has said that due to the security shield thrown during the Olympic Games any aircraft entering Greek airspace without submitting flight plans will be shot down.
HARAVGHI: “Enough of the occupation”. The communist party mouthpiece focused on the anti-occupation event held at Dherynia, saying that the people showed that the desire for peace and reunification is still strong.
