22-year-old dies of injuries

A 22-YEAR-old man who was critically injured in a motorcycle accident last week died yesterday in Nicosia General Hospital.

Avgoustinos Kinas had sustained heavy injuries to the head last Thursday when the motorcycle on which he was a passenger slammed into a lorry parked on the side of the road. The motorcycle driver, Christodoulos Lantides, 21, died on the same day.

Unions adopt a wait-and-see approach to CY plan

CYPRUS Airways (CY) unions said yesterday they would wait to see a new strategic plan drawn up to help pull the ailing national carrier out of the red, and which may involve redundancies, before making any comment.

Both the pilots union PALPU and the cabin crew union CYNIKA, the airline’s biggest, said they would be handed copies of the plan at a meeting later today.

Safety before prettiness, say Paphos fishermen

FISHERMEN in Paphos yesterday gathered at the coastal town’s harbour to protest work being done near the castle, at a time when the protective wall at the harbour remained damaged.

The fisherman blocked the entrance to the harbour from 6am and prevented workers from completing a new floor outside the castle for the opera festival early in September.

Hunting licence exams ‘a first’

FOR the first time ever 500 Cypriot hunters will this week take exams to qualify for a hunting licence, the Game Services said yesterday.

Murder suspect ‘admits involvement’

MAGDA Eleftheriou, 32, accused of having masterminded her husband Pavlos Christodoulou’s murder last month, is said to have admitted telling her Pakistani lover to strike the victim. She is also said to have admitted calling her husband from a SoEasy mobile phone asking him to meet her at the place where he would be murdered.

Doctos found guilty of negligence

TWO STATE doctors were yesterday found guilty of medical negligence over the 2001 death of a 14-year-old boy.

The boy died from complications after doctors failed to remove a piece of fabric lodged in a wound caused by rusty metal.

It was later established that the death of Giorgos Hadjidemetris from Geri had been caused by a shocked lung.
