Spate of attacks against police officers

POLICE are investigating four cases of attacks on officers between Monday night and the early hours of yesterday.

The first incident occurred at around 8pm on Monday in Nicosia, when a police officer stopped a 17-year-old who was driving a motorcycle with no licence plate.

The police officer confiscated the motorcycle, but while transporting it to the police station he was stopped in the street and attacked by the 17-year-old, his father and his 25-year-old brother, who took the motorcycle back.

All three men have been arrested, while the police officer was taken to Nicosia General Hospital where he was treated and released.

The second incident occurred at a quarter past midnight yesterday, when a woman reported her father was smashing objects and threatening her and her mother.

When a police officer went to their house he was attacked by the woman’s 55-year-old father, who hit the police officer with his fists, ripped his shirt and verbally abused him.
The man was arrested while the officer was taken to Nicosia General Hospital, where he was treated and released.

The third incident occurred at 10pm on Monday night in Limassol, when police were asked to intervene in a brawl involving eight people.

While trying to stop the brawl, three of the police officers were attacked and injured.
The three police officers as well as three of the men in the brawl were taken to Limassol General Hospital.

The two police officers were treated and released, while the third stayed in for observation.

The three suspects were treated and released and later all eight men involved in the fight were arrested.

The final incident occurred at around 9pm on Monday night in Larnaca, when members of the traffic police stopped a car being driven by a 23-year-old and a 27-year-old passenger.

While the police were checking up on the car, the passenger attacked the police officer. When the officer attempted to arrest him, the man pushed him to the ground.
The man was arrested.
