THE U.S. is set to give the Turkish Cypriots $30 million this year to ease the economic isolation in the north, reports from Washington said yesterday.

“We’ve worked up a package designed to ease the economic isolation and keep the idea of a settlement alive,” a senior State Department official told Reuters.

Excavations in Paphos hope to uncover treasures of the past

EXCAVATIONS are underway on an island off the coast of Ayios Georgios tis Peyias in the Paphos district, conducted by the New York University.

In 1982, extensive archaeological remains discovered led to the expropriation of the island as important resource for the cultural heritage of Cyprus. Paphos served as the island’s capital during the Hellenistic period (323-30 BC).

Cyprus keeps its interest rates unchanged

CYPRUS’ Central Bank kept interest rates unchanged at a monthly review yesterday, saying the current economic climate did not warrant an adjustment.

The bank’s benchmark rate is 5.5 per cent for advances and 3.5 per cent for deposits.
