Someone will be watching you

Finally, cameras to patrol the roads

BIG BROTHER will be watching you on the roads as the government has recently decided to install cameras to control the traffic violations. The plan is currently in an experimental phase but if it is successful, cameras will be installed throughout the island.

According to information, six cameras will be set up at various locations. The police will monitor the traffic and see how well the cameras actually work.

Four cameras will be installed at junctions in Nicosia where a high frequency of accidents have been recorded. One speed camera will be moving up and down the Nicosia–Limassol highway and another will be kept at one location.

The first stage of the system will cost £500,000. The whole system is expected to be completed in five stages which will amount to £5 million.

The traffic police believe that hidden cameras snapping shots of drivers violating traffic laws will lessen accidents and prevent people from ignoring regulations.

The cameras on the highway will also help reduce speed, as the drivers will not know where the cameras are positioned. Statistics show that traffic accidents have decreased significantly in other countries with camera systems.

The cameras which will be placed on the traffic lights will take a picture of anyone violating traffic laws, such as running a red light, talking on mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt. The picture will be taken of the rear end of the car and the driver.

The ticket will be sent to the person by mail and if the fine is not paid in time then the case will be sent to court. The picture, the date and time of the violation will be kept by police and can be used as evidence in the event of a trial.
