North to miss out on Olympic torch

A LAST-minute change has scuttled plans for the Olympic torch to be seen on both sides of the Green Line on its journey through Cyprus.

Turkish Cypriots yesterday blasted the Athens 2004 organising committee (ATHOC), accusing them of not allowing the north Nicosia Municipality to stage a welcoming party for the torch-bearers carrying the flame.

Shipping expert: trade difficult without government permission

A LONDON-based Cypriot expert on shipping and IMO regulations said he believed Turkish Cypriots would face problems exporting their produce through Famagusta unless the Greek Cypriot government had some jurisdiction.

JELLYFISH HAVE inundated the waters off the Limassol coast, resulting in many bathers falling victim to their disturbance and their stings.

According to media reports, lifeguard Andreas Isichiou said there were hundreds of jellyfish in the sea around Limassol during the week and many swimmers raced to the lifeguards in need of first aid.

THE TURKISH Cypriot ‘parliament’ yesterday voted to hold early general elections after resignations left the ruling pro-reunification coalition with an awkward minority in the legislature of the breakaway enclave.

Making the rounds

The Olympic torch will begin its journey throughout the free areas of Cyprus today after it arrives at the Paphos port at 10.30am. From there it will be taken to the Paphos Castle by Andreas Stylianou then it will continue through the main streets in the town.
