Police chief defends handling of Matsakis case

THE CHIEF of police yesterday rejected criticism that the police acted unlawfully in the case concerning MEP Marios Matsakis who allegedly sought £10,000 to help acquit a police officer involved in a manslaughter case.

Police have been accused of trapping the MEP while some legal circles suggested that the recordings of the meetings were made illegally.

Olympic torch to pass through north

THE OLYMPIC flame is to pass through north Cyprus after a joint decision by the Cyprus Olympic Committee and the Athens 2004 Organising Committee.

According to a written statement yesterday, both the committees said that the decision was taken in the spirit of the motto of the torch run: “Our flame unites the world”.

Cyprus is the 11th most expensive country out of the 31 that were researched regarding the prices of food, drinks and cigarettes. The prices of consumer products in Cyprus were some of the highest in Europe in 2003.
