Serdar’s father-in-law back in jail

TURKISH Cypriot businessman Salih Boyaci returned to jail on Wednesday after spending three months in hospital in Istanbul.

Boyaci, who is Serdar Denktash’s father-in-law, was jailed for six years earlier this year for embezzling funds from his bankrupted Cyprus Credit Bank. In March, however, he was released in order to undergo medical treatment in Turkey.

Boyaci returned to Cyprus despite efforts by his lawyers to overturn a court ruling ordering his return.

His lawyer told the press he had returned “unwillingly”, but had done so to avoid speculation that he was attempting to avoid justice.

Elements of the Turkish Cypriot press reacted angrily to the way Boyaci returned to jail as a “VIP”. According to reports, the disgraced businessman was met at the airport in a ‘state’ vehicle by Denktash.

Denktash said he believed the courts had been influenced by public opinion and that its decision was “inhuman”.
