Importers aware of UK Cherokee recall, but say no problem in Cyprus

THE IMPORTERS of Chrysler in Cyprus yesterday admitted they were aware that 7,000 Jeep Cherokees were being recalled in the UK because of a potential steering problem, but assured that no such problem had been found in the cars sold in Cyprus.

According to reports from the UK, Chrysler said water could enter front suspension components, causing them to corrode and come undone. In severe cases, this could lead to a loss of steering control, the reports said.

Owners in the UK are being contacted and requested to take their Jeeps to authorised Chrysler repairers to have new protective shields fitted if necessary. Only 2002 and 2003 Cherokees are affected.

But Jeep Sales Manager in Cyprus, Constantinos Ginzos told the Cyprus Mail yesterday that no such problem has so far been recorded on the island, and assured that there was nothing wrong with the cars being sold locally.

“From May until today we sold 30 Jeeps and we’ve had no problems,” he said.
“Maybe the cars that were recalled were other under different specifications, but our cars are problem free.”

Ginzos said Jeep owners that purchased their cars in 2002 and 2003 could bring their cars in for a check if they were worried that their vehicle could face the same problem.
