THE ATTORNEY-general’s office is set to appeal a district court judge’s decision not to sentence five Pakistani men who were charged with entering the Republic through an illegal port in the north.

The five men were arrested after admitting they had crossed over to the south after arriving on the island through the illegal airport at Tymbou.

THE Greek Cypriot side got off lightly in UN Secretary-general Kofi Annan’s critical report on the failed Cyprus negotiations, diplomats said yesterday.

They were responding to a seven-page letter sent by President Tassos Papadopoulos to Annan this week, which was circulated at the UN Security Council as an official document.

Cabinet seeks to stem rural depopulation

THE CABINET has approved guidelines for an Interior Ministry housing policy aimed at reducing rural depopulation, a ministry official confirmed yesterday.

Speaking to the Cyprus Mail yesterday, Rea Kourtelli said the ministry had prepared final criteria and proposals that would see the introduction of rural development schemes and state subsidy to people with special needs.

THE Turkish Cypriot ‘council of ministers’ has ratified a bill that if passed by ‘parliament’ could make smoking illegal in many public buildings and force restaurant and bar owners to create separate no smoking areas.

Truck drivers threaten indefinite strike

TRUCK drivers have warned they would go on indefinite strike unless the Communications Ministry revokes all ‘B’ licences issued since last October.
The decision was taken at a truck drivers’ union (POVEK) meeting on Wednesday evening in Limassol.

UN to vote on peacekeeping force

The Security Council will vote today on a draft resolution that may see the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus being withdrawn.

The US has said that it does not believe the peacekeeping force (UNFICYP) need stay on the island for longer than three months, however the government would like them to remain in Cyprus until at least December.
