Stormy weather down to changing seasons

THE unpredictable weather during the past two weeks has not made for a favourable spring or even mark the beginning of a long summer. The downpour of rain on Wednesday afternoon gave the impression it was a November day as the sun hid behind the thickening clouds and the wind carried an autumn chill.

Director of the weather services Kyriacou Theofilou yesterday told the Cyprus Mail that there was a reason for the cooler weather and sudden opening of the heavens.

“The area near Cyprus has been affected by low pressure which caused the rain. Now we are not in such low pressure, but we could expect some clouds and a few showers,” said Theofilou.

He added that as of today the weather would begin to improve and temperatures would stabilise. “We may have some clouds and the possibility of showers on higher grounds.”
The temperature is expected to reach 28 C inland, 26 C on the south east coast and 24 C on the northwest coastal region.

“We can expect a good weekend, with clear skies, plenty of sunshine and no rain,” said Theofilou.

When asked why May this year was not as warm as other years, Theofilou said that the weather took different courses and could not be relied upon simply by the record of previous years.

“The weather is unpredictable, especially during times when the seasons are changing,” said Theofilou.

However, the island can undoubtedly expect another long, scorching summer with plenty of sunshine and little or no rain.
