Editorial – Only Denktash can celebrate our resounding ‘no’

PRESIDENT Papadopoulos must have been overjoyed yesterday as the Greek Cypriots heeded his call for a “resounding no” in the referendum. The means he used to achieve the result may have been unscrupulous, but there is no denying the fact that the people’s verdict was clearly and emphatically against the Annan plan and must be respected.

Where nation comes before a fall

THE GREEK Cypriots have just been fatally foolish. It is going to be horrendously difficult to persuade any of the outside players, let alone all of them, to give the Greek Cypriots a second chance. I can assure everyone that the coming few months will be very difficult for the Greek Cypriots. The ‘OXI’ mentality of Greek Cypriots will end on Saturday, April 24.

Where do we go from here?

IF, by some miracle, the result of yesterday’s referenda was a double ‘yes’, you can safely ignore the rest of this article and go join the street celebrations! If, as expected, the result from my compatriots the Greek Cypriots was a ‘no’, then we will have to postpone the celebrations for some time, and reflect on where we go from here.

THE AKEL general secretary went to sleep on Good Friday with a ‘yes’ and woke up on Saturday with a ‘no’. A ‘no’ that he did not have the political courage to support, so he concealed it under a last minute demand for postponement of the referenda. AKEL also asked for assurances that the solution would be enforced.
