Easter bingeing down from last year

LIMASSOL was worst hit by Easter bingers this year with the hospital recording more than 200 cases of indigestion, gastritis and other over-eating related illnesses, but doctors nationwide said figures were way down compared to previous years.

The surge in stomach grievances came after the annual meat fest, which followed the 50-day fasting period before Easter. From Good Friday until yesterday, Nicosia General Hospital Emergency Department director Costas Antoniades said that although the festive weekend had been a busy one, there were only a few cases of patients suffering from overeating.

In Larnaca there were only a few cases, while in Paphos the number of people suffering from stomach problems was minimal.

However, according to the head of the Limassol hospital’s Emergency Department, Dr Petros Koureas, there were more than 200 cases resulting from overeating.

“The number has not been as high as in previous years, and, although we were quite busy with other emergency incidents, there were around 200 cases of people suffering from stomach problems caused from overeating,” he said.

In 2002, Limassol Hospital had an increase in symptoms resulting from over-consumption compared to 2001 while Paphos Hospital Emergency Department recorded around 1,000 incidents.
