Sir, Assuming that the English translation of President Papadopoulos’ ‘address to the nation’ on CyBC last night was correct, I am left with the conclusion that he has not read the same plan that I have. He kept talking about the dissolution of the Republic of Cyprus – not once did he mention the future as the United Republic of Cyprus.

Cyprus to host UEFA anniversary congress

CYPRUS will play host to the world’s football governing bodies this April at the meeting of UEFA’s 28th Ordinary Congress. Europe’s football governing body will celebrate its Jubilee in Limassol on April 20-23. Cyprus Football Association (CFA) President Costakis Koutsokoumnis said his association was “extremely honoured” that the decision was taken to stage the big event in Cyprus.

Paphos fire A FIRE broke out yesterday at 1.30am at an apartment in Kato Paphos on the Tombs of the Kings Road. The couple living in the apartment, Takis Louka, and his wife were asleep when the fire began. They woke up and managed to leave before they were injured. The fire brigade attended the scene and put the fire out, which only damaged the hall, two chairs and the television.

So much to do before the referendums

AS THE people of Cyprus toil and trouble over the future of the island, a great deal of work remains to be done to prepare for the April 24 referendum. Both President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash have come out keenly against the Annan plan, yet both sides remain obliged to take a list of preparatory measures in the run-up to the vote.

Grey Wolves head for Cyprus

TURKEY’S ultra-nationalist Nationalist Peoples Party (MHP) and infamous Grey Wolves say they will come to Cyprus “some time after April 15” to give their support to the anti-Annan plan campaign being led by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and ex-‘prime minister’ Dervish Eroglu.

Four bishops come out against Annan plan

FOUR bishops yesterday issued an announcement urging the people to reject the United Nations plan for a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus problem. The Bishops of Paphos, Kyrenia, Salamina and Arsinoe, said that the Church considered a ‘yes’ vote to be irrational and would soon result in Greek Cypriots seeking a homeland in a foreign country.
