Man seriously hurt trying to defuse bomb outside his house

A 47-YEAR-old man was seriously injured when a bomb exploded in his hand yesterday at 1.10am outside his home on Jerusalem Street in Limassol.

Christakis Savvas was attempting to remove a bomb that had been attached to the front door handle of his home after his sister Nitsa Americanou informed him of the suspicious looking object.

As he was struggling to dismantle the device from the handle, it went off, leaving him with severe injuries. The house also sustained damage from the explosion.

Police and the fire brigade attended the scene and Savvas was rushed to the Limassol General Hospital and underwent hours of extensive surgery.

Pathologist Sophocles Sophocleous said doctors were forced to amputate some of his fingers and treat various wounds to his body. Although his condition is quite serious he is out of danger.

The police bomb squad confirmed the device had been made of highly explosive materials. Evidence that was gathered at the scene has been sent for examination.
Limassol CID is investigating.
