A 56-YEAR-old American resident of Cyprus was shot and injured to the eye early yesterday as he drove out of his driveway in Engomi, Nicosia. The man, a teacher at a private school in Larnaca, is married to a Greek Cypriot. He had been on his way to work when he was shot at 6am. His wife drove him to hospital immediately, where he was kept in for observation.

AMERICAN researcher Robert Sarmast yesterday officially launched an expedition that he hopes will result in the discovery of the lost island of Atlantis. The launch of the expedition is expected to be marked today when the scientists submerge a copper canister with the flags of Cyprus, the EU and a specially designed Atlantis flag five hours out at sea from Limassol port.
A NATIONAL Council meeting held yesterday to discuss recent developments on the Cyprus issue will continue on Wednesday, government spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said. After the two-and-a-half-hour meeting, Chrysostomides said President Tassos Papadopoulos had briefed the political parties on his visit to Athens on Wednesday.
The House yesterday approved amendments to consumer tax and VAT legislation in light to tomorrow’s accession to the European Union. The changes, which took immediate effect, have prompted, among others, a 0.3 cent raise per litre of diesel and 0.5 cents per litre of leaded petrol.
