Poster competition in anti-smoking campaign

CHILDREN and teenagers are being given the opportunity be part of an anti-smoking campaign by submitting their own poster in a competition organised by the Centre of Studies for children and teenagers in Cyprus and supported by UNOPS.

The point of the competition is to make youngsters aware of the dangers of smoking and to discourage teenagers from taking up the habit. Through the competition, organisers hope to cut down the number of adults who smoke in public places, especially in the presence of children, as this could influence them to start smoking when they grow up.
Any child under 14 is eligible to enter the competition and will be judged by a panel. The first three winners will receive gift vouchers for educational material worth £120, £80 and £50 respectively.

The winner will also have the pleasure of seeing his/her poster in public places frequented by children and young adults.

The judges will pick a winner based on the artistic expression of the poster, its feeling, level of creativity, originality as well as the insight of the written message that must accompany the poster.

The posters can be made out of any artistic material as well on a computer. They can be in colour or black and white. Those wishing to submit a poster as a group may also do so, but each submission must consist of only one poster.

The children are encouraged to use their initiative to come up with a poster that projects a strong message towards youngsters and smokers. It is important for it to highlight the dangers of smoking.

The poster must not exceed 40x60cm. Competitors must not copy an existing poster. Children must also submit their name, address and telephone number with their poster.
All posters must be sent to the Centre of Studies for children and teenagers on Diogenous Street no. 6, Engomi, P.O. BOX 22006, 1516, Nicosia.

Entries must be submitted by March 31, 2004. The winners will be notified on Friday April 30, 2004.
