Health drive targets schools

Health Minister Dina Akkelidou yesterday confirmed plans to promote and increase awareness of healthy lifestyle issues within schools. The drive follows reports that more and more children are leading progressively unhealthier lives, with a large percentage of today’s youth suffering from obesity, she said.

Tassos: I trust the people

PRESIDENT Tassos Papadopoulos said yesterday he trusted the people’s judgement in deciding how to vote in the referendum on the Annan plan. Papadopoulos was commenting on statements made by US special envoy Thomas Weston on Sunday, that whichever said ‘no’ in the referenda would pay a heavy price.

Cyprus’s most famous poet dies

CYPRUS’ most famous poet Costas Montis died at the age of 90 yesterday at his home in Ayios Dhometios. Montis was born in Famagusta in 1914. He studied law at Athens University and went on to compose dozens of collections of poems, as well as novels and translated works for theatre. He wrote works for Greece as well as poetry about his island.

Kyrenia bishop blasts ‘evil’ plan

KYRENIA district municipalities and associations yesterday blasted the Annan plan, saying accepting it was tantamount to national catastrophe. At a gathering held at Nicosia’s International Conference Centre on Sunday, speakers vilified the plan in its current form, but said they supported President Papadopoulos’ efforts for a just solution.

U.S. STATE Department Special Co-ordinator for Cyprus Thomas Weston yesterday met party leaders, seeking to play down the furore caused by his warnings that whoever rejected the Annan plan would have to pay a heavy price.
