‘There is no excuse’ to hold off bases rent

Too much shouting on TV

Sir, It is with great concern that I note the bad quality of Cypriot television programmes. Most disturbing of all, however, is the systematic violence and shouting of actors on locally produced shows. Information centre opens for Turkish Cypriots

BY OPENING an information centre for Turkish Cypriots in Nicosia, Constantinos Candounas says he is doing something the government should have done long ago. Candounas’ Information Centre, close to the capital’s popular Ledra Street, opened just two weeks ago to help orientate Turkish Cypriots to life in the south.

CyBC to boost Turkish programmes

CYBC is overhauling its schedules, the public broadcaster’s chairman Andreas Aloneftis announced yesterday. “We must not stray away from the philosophy of public broadcasting, whose responsibility is to put society first and entertainment viewing second,” said Aloneftis. He said CyBC would now be a steadier channel that would offer coverage on all the issues faced by Cyprus.

Harvard research institute for Cyprus

HARVARD University and the Cyprus government have come reached an initial agreement to set up an international Research and Technology Institute in Cyprus. Commerce Minister George Lillikas announced yesterday this was the first time Harvard had agreed to have its name linked to such a project, calling the institute an “associated institute with Harvard University”.

Talat: Cyprus donors’ meeting on April 15

MEHMET ALI Talat said yesterday an international donors’ conference for the island would be held on April 15, six days before Cypriots vote on a reunification plan. Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders are now locked in almost daily UN-sponsored talks aimed at ending the 30-year division of their east Mediterranean island.

Turkish troop numbers up significantly since 2003

TURKISH troops outnumber National Guardsmen in Cyprus by more than three to one, experts warned yesterday. According to a study carried out by the Intercollege Strategic Research Centre, the number of Turkish troops in the north has risen to 36,000 this year, compared to 30,000 in 2,000.
