BoC post £100m profits for 2003

BANK of Cyprus (BoC) yesterday announced core profits, before provisions for bad and doubtful debts for 2003, of £100.6 million, a 12 per cent increase over 2002 but the bank posted a pre-tax loss for the year of £17.4 million and an after-tax loss of £28.8 million. The pre-tax loss in 2002 was £13.9 million and after-tax loss £21.3 million.

Town planning boss denies wrongdoing in zoning controversy

THE town planning director yesterday denied any wrongdoing in a land development case in Limassol in which he was accused of having vested interests. The House Watchdog Committee heard that an investigation was launched late in 2000 into the allegations against Yiannos Papadopoulos, who was later acquitted by the civil service commission of any wrongdoing.

FOUR kidney patients have been given a second chance at life after undergoing lifesaving kidney transplants this year. This is because, unlike last year, the Paraskevaidion Surgical and Transplant Foundation received two cadaver organ donors within the first two months of the New Year.

Money talks: business expected to sidestep any restrictions in united Cyprus

BUSINESSES are expected to get round any restrictions contained in the final version of the Annan Plan for the settlement of the Cyprus problem, the weekly Financial Mirror reported yesterday. The paper said one Greek Cypriot franchise owner was already known to be making exploratory visits to the north with outlet sites in mind.

Short shrift for Turkish missile claims

DEFENCE Minister Koullis Mavronicolas yesterday blasted the Turkish Cypriot side for accusing Greek Cypriots of increasing the range of their missiles while peace talks were under way. The Anatolia agency quoted Turkish Cypriot ‘Prime Minister’ Mehmet Ali Talat as saying he couldn’t get an answer on the issue when it was brought up during Tuesday’s talks at Nicosia International Airport.
