Bomb found outside Vlittis’ house

AN EXPLOSIVE device was yesterday found outside the house of beleaguered Paralimni Mayor Nicos Vlittis.

Police evacuated Vlittis’ home and the area after the mayor’s wife Kyriaki found a strange item on their balcony at 7.30am.

The CID immediately visited the scene and confirmed the item was indeed a bomb. An explosives expert was also present who attempted to deactivate the device.

Neighbours told police that this was the second attempt against Vlittis’ in the past month. Vlittis had asked the police to keep the first incident out of the public eye.

Vlittis was recently asked to give a statement to police regarding allegations of abuse of power. He denies any wrongdoing.

The Paralimni Municipal Council insists Vlittis should have tendered his resignation after his son-in-law Andreas Kakoulis was arrested on suspicion of abuse of power, bribery of a public employee and corruption over the period 2001-2003.

Kakoulis was arrested for a second time yesterday after being released two days ago and was formally charged with abuse of power, bribery and corruption.
