SIMERINI: “Tell the truth about the Pakistanis”. Police chief Tasos Panayiotou was told to clear the four Pakistanis recently arrested for questioning in connection with an alleged terrorist attack at Paphos airport. In a letter of complaint he recently received from the National Human Rights Protection Organisation, Panayiotou was requested to publicise that the four were students and not terrorists. The organisation also requested that police reinstate the Pakistanis’ dignity and human rights, which had been violated through police treatment.
PHILELEFTHEROS: “Twenty-six-year-old Limassol man in possession of cocaine and cannabis”. A Limassol court remanded a 26-year-old man in eight-day custody after he was arrested on suspicion of dealing drugs. The young man was arrested after police searched his apartment on Saturday following a tip-off. The authorities found cocaine in the suspect’s toilet, which he had tried to flush away, as well as 157 grams of cannabis and £1,800 in cash.
ALITHIA: “Arsonist sets fire to antique car”. A 25-year-old man from Nicosia has allegedly admitted to setting fire to a car manufactured in 1900. The incident took place at 3.40am on Saturday and destroyed the 104-year-old car, whose value is unknown. The suspect was arrested after he admitted himself for treatment at Nicosia general hospital suffering severe burns to his hands and face. The 25-year-old was charged in writing and released.
THARROS: “Tragic New Year for 67-year-old”. Police said a 67-year-old Nicosia woman lost her battle for life and finally died from injuries suffered in a road accident on January 1. Katina Hadjistavri had been recuperating in Nicosia general hospital for over two weeks after an oncoming car on Stasinou Avenue in Nicosia hit her, said police.
POLITIS: “Arrests made after police chase”. Five foreigners were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of stealing motorbikes, committing traffic violations and trespassing. Police were informed about the group of teenagers after they were spotted breaking into a Limassol warehouse. Although they made a run for it, one of the 15-year-olds was caught and in a statement named his four accomplices, who were then also arrested.
HARAVGHI: “Demonstrations and disagreements in Karvounas”. Sunday’s demonstration at the Karvounas crossroad by residents from Kyperounda village and the greater Pitsilia area resulted in minor scuffles between demonstrators who gathered to protest against recent fuel price increases. The crux of the disagreement was over the fact that Kyperounda’s community council had arranged the protest without consulting other councils in the area, who claimed political expediency was behind the move.
