PHILELEFTHEROS “Fire burnt to cinders eight apartments” A fire broke out at 6.00pm at the Faros Village hotel complex on Thursday and burnt eight apartments. The night guard on duty saw the fire and called the fire brigade and it took four fire trucks to put the fire out. Nobody was harmed as the complex was closed for the winter. According to police the fire was not set deliberately.
POLITIS “New wave of increase” A new wave of increases in fuel prices by three cents per litre for petrol and 2.6 centc for diesel has raised concern among consumers. With the new prices implemented on Thursday night, the government says it will cover the losses of £6 million created due to the rise in international oil prices. The Commerce Minister said that by June the increases would stop and a steady price be set.
ALITHIA “Aloneftis paid 10 times more to Alfa” CyBC will pay £2million to Alfa Greece to air their programs over three years, while Sigma paid £350,000 for four years. CyBC believes their investment will draw in larger viewing audiences with shows presented by Roulla Koromila. The station also says they will be able to replace the foreign shows with Greek ones. Sigma feels this is CyBC’s attempt to compete against the private channels, adding that while they made profits with an income of £8million, CyBC failed to do so with income of £20m.
HARAVGHI “Salmonella Cypria affects tourists” Salmonella Cypria has affected tourists from Scandinavian countries. Director of the Veterinary Services Fidias Loucaides said yesterday it had been confirmed that many tourists did not have the antibodies that protected Cypriots against the bacteria. Most cases were reported among visitors from Scandinavia. Agriculture Minister Timis Efthimiou said the problem was very limited.
MACHI “Student mugged for £1” A 19-year-old man from Limassol mugged a 17-year-old student for £1. According to police, the pupil was attacked in the school yard by a stranger, who hit him in the face and stole £1. The 19-year-old was arrested and admitted to stealing the amount 1.
SIMERINI “Mother leaves five children alone” Five children were left on their own yesterday because their mother was imprisoned for debt. She had signed her ex-husband’s loan as a guarantor and was now left to pay back £200,000. Her eldest son is 16 and he has had to leave school and start working. His father’s debt comes from bad investments. The eldest daughter, 18, now looks after the children and visited her mother in prison. The children have made an appeal for someone to help their mother out of prison.
