Cycle lanes for Paphos

PAPHOS municipality will become the first in Cyprus to construct a full network of cycle lanes in and around the town.

The project to create cycle lanes was agreed five years ago under the EU’s ‘Life Programme’, which was adopted by the Ministry of Interior.

The Life Programme concentrates on environmental and quality of life projects. Paphos was chosen initially for the pilot project, which Limassol, Larnaca, Nicosia, Ayia Napa and Paralimni will follow.

Green Party deputy George Peridikis explained why the project has taken so long: “They had to dig Paphos up because of the sewage system. So the bicycle network was postponed. Now they are going to start it again.

“But the EU said, ‘If you don’t start the project we will cut finances and ask for the money back’.
“I don’t know how much finance there was,” he added.

The first phase of the construction covers two-and-a-half kilometres of cycle lanes. They will be built by Paphos municipality, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation and the housing department.
