KYPEROUNTA residents in Troodos were yesterday furious with a government decision to increase heating fuel prices, saying that the decision was practically an eviction notice. The angry villagers said yesterday that they had no other option but to turn to more conventional methods of heating such as wood-burning furnaces and fireplaces because heating fuel had simply become too expensive.

PHILELEFTHEROS “Fire burnt to cinders eight apartments” A fire broke out at 6.00pm at the Faros Village hotel complex on Thursday and burnt eight apartments. The night guard on duty saw the fire and called the fire brigade and it took four fire trucks to put the fire out. Nobody was harmed as the complex was closed for the winter. According to police the fire was not set deliberately.

Latest act in bubble farce just isn’t funny

THE ESTABLISHMENT of a legal aid fund to help investors who had lost money in the Cyprus Stock Exchange bubble take public companies to court is the latest idea the government has been toying with. Finance minister Marcos Kyprianou informed the Attorney-general about this idea and how it would work in a letter that was also sent to the House of Representatives.

Drug suspect injured in police shootout

A MAN was injured by police gunfire during a drug squad stake out on Thursday night at an Industrial area in Nicosia. The police saw a man get into a car at 7.30pm and they tried to get his attention by switching on the police car lights. When the man failed to respond, one police officer then stepped out of the vehicle wearing his police jacket and signalled to the driver to get out.

Former minister blasts government fuel policy

FORMER Commerce and Industry Minister Nicos Rolandis yesterday slammed the government’s decision to slap an extra three cents per litre onto the price of petrol following increases in the international price of oil. Speaking to the Cyprus Mail, Rolandis said the government’s tactics were wrong and would condemn consumers to pay an extra £23 million a year.

Cycle lanes for Paphos

PAPHOS municipality will become the first in Cyprus to construct a full network of cycle lanes in and around the town. The project to create cycle lanes was agreed five years ago under the EU’s ‘Life Programme’, which was adopted by the Ministry of Interior. The Life Programme concentrates on environmental and quality of life projects.

MMS back on line, just don’t tell anyone about it

CYTA’s multi media messaging (MMS) service that was started in December 2003 and quickly suspended due to problems of heavy usage has been reintroduced to mobile phone users since January 12, but CyTA chose not to tell anyone about it for fear the system would again be overloaded.
