Second mugging in the park

A 50-year-old man strolling through Nicosia’s Municipal Garden on Sunday night was mugged, in the second such incident in less than a week.

According to the victim, it was about 8pm when two men approached him and asked him to hand over his money. Another two men then came along and began punching him in the face.

The victim told police he believed the perpetrators were foreigners. The four men fled the scene after snatching his wristwatch.

The man was then taken to the nearby Nicosia General Hospital where he was treated for cuts and bruises.
Last Thursday, a 27-year-old was assaulted and battered in similar fashion by a gang of 10, again inside the Municipal Garden.

Until recently, muggings on the island were almost unheard of, and walking around at any time of day or night was considered completely safe.
