Turkish envoys hunker down to discuss strategy

TURKISH Ambassadors to 15 EU countries, the United States and the occupied areas were meeting in Ankara yesterday to assess EU and Cyprus policies for 2004 as European Union External Affairs Commissioner Chris Patten made it clear that a deal to admit Turkey would depend on “a positive decision on Cyprus”.

Just who is kidding who here?

Village hit by Boxing Day whirlwind

A LARNACA district village sustained £30,000 in damage when a whirlwind hit the area on Friday morning, the community council president said yesterday. Andreas Antoniou said the whirlwind, which started at around 1.30am in the southern part of Anglisides village, uprooted trees, tore down electrical wires and smashed store windows and doors.

14-year-old driver’s parents may face charges

A 14-year-old Nicosia boy was caught driving a car on Boxing Day after he collided with a parked vehicle, police said yesterday. At around 8.15pm, the minor was driving a car on Metochiou Street in Archangelos, when under circumstances still being investigated he crashed into a 52-year-old man’s parked car. No one was hurt in the accident, but both were badly damaged.

Security alert at Larnaca Airport

CYPRUS was on high terror alert over the holiday period after information that British, American and Israeli aircraft at Larnaca Airport could be a target. Interior Minister Andreas Christou said that authorities had been warned about a threat to aircraft using Larnaca Airport or flying through the island’s airspace.

Cyprus meat safe from BSE

CYPRUS does not import beef or beef extracts from the United States, the Health Ministry said yesterday. The Ministry’s medical and public health services released a statement assuring the public following fears that burgers from popular fast-food chains could be infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) after the first apparent US case of mad cow disease was discovered last week.
