Study says Paphos supermarkets most expensive

PAPHOS IS the most expensive district for shopping, while the cheapest supermarket is in Nicosia according to a research study conducted by the Pancyprian Consumers Association.
The study was conducted between October 3 and November 26, 2003, with visits to 40 supermarkets islandwide.

In Nicosia the cheapest supermarket is Athienitis and the most expensive is AlphaMega in Engomi. Limassol’s E&S is the most costly in the district while the cheapest is Chris Cash & Carry Columbia. The cheapest goods available in Paphos are at Orphanides Philips and the priciest at Papantoniou Ellados. In Larnaca the most lowest prices were found at Orphanides while the most expensive was the ironically named Ftini Gonia (Cheap Corner). In Famagusta there are only two supermarkets with the cheaper of the two being Orphanides. The dearer one is Kokkinos.

President of the Pancyprian Consumers Association, Petros Markou, said he had no idea why some supermarkets were more expensive than others.

According the findings of the study, Paphos’ supermarkets rate as the most expensive. Second come Nicosia’s, third Limassol’s and then Larnaca’s.

The study researched the differences in prices of thirty products within a price range of 30 per cent of each other. The vice president of the Supermarket’s Association, Christos Orphanides said the study revealed the facts and the association would continue to support the Consumers Association.

“We received the results of the study and I want to stress that all the supermarkets are separate companies and allocate their own prices within reason. Our association will help the Consumers Association and their studies, so consumers are informed on the products they are buying, the cost and the quality,” said Orphanides. “This study confirmed what products have been bought and the differences in prices at all the supermarkets in Cyprus.”
