Doctor denies he was negligent in death of woman

LIMASSOL gynaecologist George Mitas yesterday denied charges of medical negligence during a fertility treatment that caused the death of a 37-year-old woman last week, saying her death was the result of an unfortunate incident.

In a statement to journalists yesterday, Mitas said the patient had been under local anaesthetic during the operation to extract one of her eggs, and that the procedure could have happened at any clinic without the need for an anaesthetist or cardiologist present.

Mitas said he would not be seeing any patients until tomorrow when he is expected to move his clinic to new premises.

Meanwhile President Tassos Papadopoulos said yesterday that a disciplinary investigation against Medical Services Chief Constantinos Mallis should be completed without any further delays, and refused a request by House Health Committee chairman Antonis Karras to arrange a meeting with Mallis in order to hear his side of the story.

“If Dr Mallis wants to state his case against the Health Ministry, he can do so through the Health Minister and the Health Minister can then brief me,” Papadopoulos said.
