PHILELEFTHEROS “Students involved in drugs” Six people – four students, one soldier and a 23-year-old man – were arrested and charged with illegal possession of drugs. The police first found one student with 14 cigarettes containing cannabis. He then named his supplier, another student, who was arrested. This student then told police he had got the drugs from two other students. And the last student to be questioned named the soldier.

POLITIS “She didn’t call her daughter by her name” A young Cinderella has suffered at the hands of a cruel mother who would not even call her by her name. The mother beat and kicked her child on a regular basis and put her in charge of all the household duties. The physical and mental abuse continued for years until the mother was finally taken to court, which sentenced her to a year in prison while her daughter has been placed with the social services.

ALITHIA “He kidnapped and raped a 37-year-old mother” A former convict who was recently released from prison is believed to be responsible for the kidnapping and rape of a 37-year-old mother of two from Strovolos. The CID is investigating the incident and has issued and arrest warrant for 30-year-old Varnavas Evgeniou Kleovoulou. The man entered her house at 4am and tried to rape her while she slept. She began to call for help so he forced her into his car. He then led her to Kotsiatis where he raped her and dropped her off near her house.

HARAVGHI “Illegal clinics” Centres practicing artificial insemination must be closed down, as they do not have the required licence to carry out the procedure. Yesterday at the House Health Committee, deputies informed the Attorney-general that these centres did not have a clinic license and were therefore operating illegally. Committee members demanded that these centres be shut down immediately. AKEL deputy Doros Christodoulides said those acting outside the law would be punished and the centres closed.

SIMERINI “Charlatan doctors stealing from patients” The chairman of the Limassol Medical Association Nicholas Christodoulou has discovered that some ‘doctors’ are practicing illegal medicine. He notified the Health Ministry and the police, who are investigating the matter. He said some Cypriots and lots of Russians were operating illegal clinics in Limassol and claimed to heal their patients, even from cancer. In one case a foreign man posing as a doctor was examining patients at a hotel and charging up to £100 per visit. Christodoulou said these fake doctors were putting lives at risk.

KYPROS SIMERA “Costas Simitis in Cyprus on the eve of the elections” If Greek prime minister Costas Simitis does indeed come to Cyprus for accession celebrations on May 1, he will be scoring last-minute foreign policy points ahead of the Greek elections on May 2. May 1 marks the day when Cyprus will officially join the EU. So it is possible that Costas Simitis will be coming to Cyprus to partake in the celebrations. As the prime minister of Greece, he has managed to build a bridge between Cyprus and Greece.
