Activists stage protest against antenna

AN ENVIRONMENTAL activist group called the Green Shield yesterday staged a demonstration at Eleftheria Square against British Bases (SBA) plans to operate their new PLUTO antenna at Akrotiri in January.

The activists hung a huge banner with the words “wake up Cyprus” at the top of a building opposite the town hall and activist Tony Spanos wore on his head a microwave inscribed with the words “anti mind control”.

Speaking to the Cyprus Mail yesterday, Spanos said the aim of the demonstration was to inform Cypriots on the dangers of the antenna and to promote a website that would allow people to vote on whether they wanted the Antenna in Cyprus.

“What we are doing here today is that we want to wake Cyprus up to the fact that the antennas in Akrotiri are lethal, they are part of a war that we can’t see or hear, and they should take them back to England,” he said.

“We want all the young people to visit our website and vote online, we want to see how many people in Cyprus do not want the antennas at Akrotiri.”

Green Shield promised more action would be taken against the antennas, but refused to give out any information that would allow the SBA to know of their intentions.
“We are concerned over the future of this island and there’s much more to come, where this came from,” he said.
