Five accidents on one stretch in 50 minutes

IN LESS than one hour, five separate accidents involving 14 cars occurred on the Nicosia-Limassol highway on Sunday, according to traffic police.

As the multitude of cars rushed to avoid the end-of-weekend traffic, between 5.40pm and 6.30pm, police recorded four two-car accidents and a six-car pile up. All collisions occurred between the Tseri exit and Choirokitia turn off on the Nicosia-Limassol highway.

No one was seriously injured in any of the five accidents. But one police officer warned drivers against being too curious. “They see an accident and they slow down to a snail’s pace to see what happened. But this is very dangerous for the drivers behind and can cause more accidents on the highway,” he said.

Meanwhile, a police campaign launched at the beginning of the month to curb speeding has led to 3,411 charges against motorists from November 1 to 16.
