Inquiry into alleged speeding ticket scam
LARNACA police have launched a disciplinary and criminal investigation into allegations that six officers had falsified traffic violation documents.
The officers, all stationed at Athienou village police station, have been suspended until the conclusion of the investigation.

According to the allegations, the officers altered speeding tickets issued to friends by lowering the speed recorded, thus reducing the fine and helping them avoid the accumulation of points on their driving licences.
The alleged swindle was discovered 10 days ago after someone who had not been ‘helped’ by one of the officers decided to report it to a local deputy, who in turn reported the incident to police.

Woman killed by bus
A 43-year-old Nicosia bus driver was arrested yesterday in connection with the death of a 26-year-old woman as she tried to cross the road in Ayios Dhometios police said.
At around 6.20am Iliana Hadjiandrian was trying to cross Kyriakou Matsi Street when a bus hit her and killed her instantly, said police.
The driver was given an alcohol test, which he passed. Police said he was arrested and remanded in custody for 24 hours for further questioning.

Ancient grave found
A GRAVE believed to date from the 4th or 5th Century AD was discovered in Larnaca yesterday by construction workers works on Statigou Timayia Avenue. Archaeologists from Larnaca’s antiquities department were called to the site, where they found three human skeletons and various small vessels.
The experts believe the grave is one of many from the ancient cemetery of Kiti from the Classical period.

Since 1979 a number of other graves have been found in the area suggesting it was used as a burial ground between the 9th Century BC and Roman times in 400 AD.

NICOSIA’S Santa Rosa Avenue was yesterday renamed Spyros Kyprianou Avenue in memory of the former president and his political contribution to Cyprus.
The ceremony took place in the presence of Nicosia mayor Michalakis Zampelas, Interior Minister Andreas Christou and other officials.
