Anti-violence fundraiser today

THE ASSOCIATION for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family is holding its annual fundraiser in Nicosia today.

The event, from 12 noon to 6pm, is held in Aglandjia Park near the Filoxenia hotel. Money raised is used to replenish the non-governmental organisation’s coffers.
“It’s a fun day out for all the family,” said Susan Lartides, association board member and crisis Helpline volunteer.

There is no entrance fee: instead items are bought using coupons. Most items on sale have been donated or offered at reduced prices, Lartides said.

Food on sale includes pizzas, hamburgers, hot dogs, and souvlakia, as well as local delicacies such as lokoumades, shamishi, and palouzé.

“We try to make it a fun day concentrated around light-hearted events,” Lartides said. Games include a bouncing castle, a wheel of fortune, and life-size snakes and ladders.
Keravnos basketball players will also be on hand to sign autographs and have their photos taken with the youngsters, as will several television actors.

This year’s event is being held under the auspices of First Lady Fotini Papadopoulou.
The Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family has a Helpline (Tel: 1440) operational from Monday to Friday between 8am and 10pm, individual counselling at the centre during the week between 8am and 2.30pm, a shelter for abused women, a legal aid fund, and a volunteer training programme.
