SIMERINI: “Injured in explosion”. A 76-year-old man and his wife, both from Episkopi, were injured in an explosion on Tuesday night after he put acetylene in his home sewage pipes earlier in the day. The explosion left Demetris Andreou with injuries to his face and parts of his body, while his wife suffered fractures to her spinal cord.
ALITHIA: “Fanieros headed for US”. Convicted felon Antonis Fanieros has asked for permission to fly to the United States for emergency surgery after suffering complications from a previous operation. Makarios Hospital’s nose, throat and ear specialist, Dr Komodikis, who has set up an appointment for his patient at Harvard Medical School on October 2, diagnosed Fanieros’ condition. The convict has been in hospital for several months now, where he is guarded around the clock, at a cost to the state of £170 a day.
PHILELEFTHEROS: “Justice Minister’s phone bugged”. The latest scandal in a string of recent hiccups within the police force involves a bugging device found inside Justice Minister Doros Theodorou’s phone. The issue has been troubling the Minister, the Secret Services and the police leadership for three months now, as attempts are carried out to find who was behind the bug and had been recording every call the Minister took or made.
MACHI: “Panos Zavos to go ahead with cloning”. Cypriot scientist Panos Zavos reiterated his intention to continue his efforts into cloning a human embryo. Speaking to journalists in London he said the cloning would take place when all necessary criteria were met, which would be healthy in every respect. However, when asked, Zavos was unable to give a specific timeframe for this plan.
POLITIS: “Judges also make mistakes”. Police are unhappy with a Paphos court decision which dismissed charges against a public defendant, a lawyer and policeman, who were allegedly involved in issuing illegal visas to foreigners. The authorities said they believed the evidence provided in court was suffice to remand them in custody and to press charges. Meanwhile Paphos CID are continuing investigations into the matter and fear the threesome might only be the tip of the iceberg.
HARAVGHI: “AKEL expresses its condolences over Anna Lindh’s death”. AKEL deputy Nikos Katsourides expressed the party’s deepest sympathies over the tragic loss of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh. Katsourides, who was representing AKEL, signed the condolences book at the Swedish consul in Nicosia on Tuesday night. Lindh died in a Stockholm hospital last week from wounds she received in a knife attack while shopping.
