EAC looking towards alternative energy sources

THE CYPRUS Electricity Authority has begun raising funds for the implementation of renewable energy sources on the island, a spokesman said yesterday, deducting 0.13 cents per kWh used from electricity bills and putting the money towards harnessing wind power as an alternative generation source.

GM concerns over claims of imported corn seed

AGRICULTURE minister Timis Efthymiou has launched an investigation into reports that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) were recently imported into Cyprus. According to Phileleftheros, the minister has ordered the Institute of Agricultural Research to investigate information that a large quantity of genetically modified corn seeds has been imported from Argentina to be used for animal feed.

Rape claim by Bulgarian woman

FAMAGUSTA police were last night investigating claims by a 24-year-old Bulgarian woman that she was raped by her employer soon after he collected her from Larnaca airport. According to the police, the woman claimed she was collected at Larnaca airport on Monday by her 52-year-old employer, a farmer from Sotira.

Flawed legislation blamed for title deed nightmare

DEVELOPERS yesterday blamed red tape and flawed legislation for a massive backlog in the issue of title deeds to homeowners. The comments came after reports that the Land Registry department had launched an investigation into 50,000 cases in which homeowners had not been issued title deeds to their properties by developers upon completion and payment of their homes.

Minister admits bug was found in his office

JUSTICE Minister Doros Theodorou yesterday admitted that a telephone-tapping device had been discovered in his office during a sweep by private detectives three months ago. Speaking to CyBC radio yesterday, Theodorou said some employees had been removed from the ministry as a result. “It’s not a recent case. The bug was discovered three months ago,” he said.

Denktash determined Varosha resettlement

TURKISH Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said yesterday the Turkish side was preparing for the introduction of new measures, which would include the opening of Varosha for resettlement together with the United Nations. Following a meeting in the north, Denktash told reporters that a date to announce the new measures had not been determined yet.
