TWO YEARS ago, two hijacked passenger planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York, a third slammed into the Pentagon, and a fourth came down in open country before it could reach its intended target. It was a terrorist attack that shocked the world, September 11 a date that seared itself onto the global consciousness.

New drug raises hopes for men with erectile dysfunction

NEARLY half of men over the age of 45 experience erectile dysfunction, experts said yesterday. The problem is the condition is “under-diagnosed and under-cured”, urologist Dr Stavros Petrakis told a news conference on Tuesday to promote Cialis, a new oral prescription tablet effective in restoring a normal erectile response during sexual stimulation.

HEALTH Minister Dina Akkelidou confirmed yesterday that she had ordered an administrative investigation into a father’s claim that doctors conspired for five years to withhold information from him about the biological father of his third child.

100 more bases troops off to Iraq tonight

ANOTHER 100 British troops could fly out to Iraq tonight and another 100 this weekend, the bases said yesterday, bring the total from Cyprus to just over 400. Last weekend 120 soldiers from the 2nd Light Infantry Battalion were flown to bolster British troop numbers in Basra, in addition to the 90 sent from Cyprus at the beginning of August.

Denktash: alternative solution plan will be a ‘surprise’

AN ALTERNATIVE Cyprus solution to the Annan plan is in its final stages, Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said yesterday. During an interview with Turkish Cypriot Bayrak radio, Denktash said the ‘new model’ plan would be a “big surprise – just like the April 23 decision”.

Police not to press charges against Chinese woman who abandoned baby girl

A 25-YEAR-old Chinese student, who abandoned her newborn baby girl three weeks ago, will not face charges for abandonment, police said yesterday. “It was decided that she should not be charged and prosecuted,” a CID official confirmed. If she had been sentenced, the young mother could have spent up to five years in jail.

Three Greeks arrested in north

TURKISH CYPRIOT police yesterday arrested three men from Greece for allegedly taking photographs of military installations in Kyrenia harbour. Ioannis Chairetis, Acting Mayor of Anoyia in Crete, Sofoclis Chairetis and Emmanuel Scandalis were arrested at approximately 1pm.
