Beach safety: lifeguards in desperate plea

CREATING a centralised lifeguard service would be the first step in remedying the island’s haphazard attitude toward beach safety, but so far the government has stonewalled all attempts. Now, the efforts of DIKO deputy Marios Matsakis could stir up enough waves to set things in motion.

Watch out for bag snatchers

LIMASSOL police yesterday urged citizens to be on the lookout for a team of drive-by bag snatchers operating in the area after two incidents were reported on Thursday.

Police probe cocaine find at Limassol port

THE DRUGS Squad was yesterday still questioning suspects in connection with the discovery at Limassol port of eight kilos of cocaine inside a container bound for South Africa on Thursday. Acting on a tip-off, police found the cocaine wrapped in nylon bags hidden between granite blocks.

CY puts on extra flights

CYPRUS Airways has announced it is putting on extra flights to meet the increased summer demand. The national carrier will add 90 extra flights between August 11 and September 1, after an increase in demand for flights to and from the island. The carrier flew 33,000 passengers to and from Cyprus between August 10-13 alone, and has averaged about 8,000 passengers a day so far this month.

Man found dead in the sea

A 68-year-old man was found dead on Thursday in the sea in the Pervolia area near Larnaca. According to police, the body of Michalis Achilleos, from Nicosia, was found floating in the sea at about 4.40pm. Achilleos was given first aid before being taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
